The evidence for genetic contributions to the development of asthma and atopy has been well established. Refining the major genetic factors underlying these contributions will lead to a greater understanding of the pathophysiology of these conditions and potentially identify novel therapeutic targets. This thesis describes a series of studies designed primarily using genome-wide association.
This thesis includes a systematic literature review, a research outcome paper and a critical appraisal. The systematic literature review summarises 20 outcome papers that explore the use of Mentalisation-Based Treatment (MBT) in participants with different mental health presentations. The results suggest that MBT has strong evidence in the treatment of people with a diagnosis of Borderline.
This thesis reports on a randomised controlled study conducted in Northern Taiwan. This study examined the effectiveness of a newly developed asthma self-management program based on Bandura's self-efficacy model on levels of adolescents' self-efficacy, outcome expectation, asthma self-management behaviours and symptoms of asthma.
Asthma is one of the major chronic respiratory conditions which alter the respiratory function of the body. The World Health Organisation or WHO (2012) defines asthma as a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterised by frequent episodes of breathlessness and wheezing.
In allergic asthma, exposure to allergen can lead to episodes of bronchoconstriction known as the late asthmatic response (LAR).Despite this being a facet of asthma that patients find debilitating and the fact that this feature of asthma is often used in clinical research as an end point to study new therapeutic options, the mechanisms driving the LAR remain unclear.
